Privacy Policy
Your privacy is of the utmost importance to the Mises Institute, and we make every effort to protect the information collected through Mises Academy. This Privacy Policy describes what we collect at academy.mises.org, why we collect it, who processes it on our behalf, and the choices available to you.
Mises Academy is the Mises Institute’s online learning platform. Unlike mises.org, which offers free and anonymous access to its library without any sign-in, Mises Academy requires an account: you register and sign in so that we can enroll you in courses, save your progress, and issue your certificates. Creating an account is free.
Information We Collect
Account information. When you register you provide a username, your first and last name, an email address, and a password. Passwords are stored only in encrypted (hashed) form and are never visible to Institute staff.
Course activity. As you take a course we record your enrollment, your progress through its lessons and topics, your quiz attempts and scores, and the certificates you earn. We keep this so that you can leave a course and return to the place you stopped, and so that your completion can be confirmed.
Correspondence. If you write to us, we keep your message and our reply.
Technical and security information. Our servers and security software record standard technical information — including your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request — and log sign-in attempts. We use this to keep the site running and to detect and block attempts to break into accounts.
Analytics. We use Matomo to understand which courses and pages people find useful. Matomo runs only if you accept analytics cookies in the consent banner. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set and nothing is recorded about your visit.
How We Use Information
We use the information described above to operate Mises Academy: to create and secure your account, deliver courses, record your progress, issue certificates, respond to you, and improve what we offer.
We also use your email address to send you messages about your account and your courses, and about the Mises Institute’s educational programs, publications, events, and activities. You may opt out of these messages at any time, using the unsubscribe link in any message or by contacting us. Messages that concern your account itself — password resets, for example — are part of the service and cannot be opted out of while your account is open.
Cookies and Your Choices
Mises Academy uses cookies for three purposes:
- Signing in. WordPress sets cookies that keep you signed in and remember your display preferences. The site cannot work without these.
- Remembering your choice. A cookie records the decision you make in the consent banner, so we do not ask again on every page.
- Analytics. Optional cookies that measure how the site is used.
When you first visit, a banner asks which optional categories you accept. You may decline them and still use every part of the site, and you may change your answer at any time by reopening the cookie settings from the banner icon.
How Information Is Shared
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
We do rely on service providers who process information on our behalf, under contract and only for the purposes we specify:
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | The Institute’s constituent database | Your name, email address, and Mises Academy account number |
| Pantheon | Website hosting | Everything stored by the site, held on its servers |
| Matomo Cloud (InnoCraft) | Website analytics | Pages viewed — only if you accept analytics cookies |
| Email delivery provider | Sending account and course email | Your email address and the message |
Your Mises Academy record forms part of the Mises Institute’s constituent database, which the Institute uses to keep in touch with the people it serves about its educational programs, publications, events, and activities. You may opt out of those communications at any time without affecting your access to any course.
We may also disclose information where we are required to do so by law, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of the Mises Institute or others.
Your Rights
Under the law of some countries, you may have the right to ask us for a copy of your personal information. You may also have the right to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict how it is processed, and to receive the information you gave us in a portable format.
These rights may be limited in certain circumstances — for example, where granting a request would reveal personal information about another person.
To exercise any of these rights, contact our data protection officer at the address below.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep your account and your course records for as long as your account remains open, so that your progress and your certificates stay available to you. If you ask us to close your account, we delete the personal information held in it; anonymous statistics about how courses are used may remain, because they no longer identify anyone. Security and server logs are kept only for as long as they are useful for detecting abuse, and are then discarded.
Children
Mises Academy is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. In countries where a higher age of consent applies to online services, a user below that age should register only with the involvement of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us at the address below and we will delete it.
Storing and Securing Your Information
We take all reasonable measures to protect your personal information and to protect this site from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Traffic to Mises Academy is encrypted in transit, passwords are stored in hashed form, and sign-in attempts are monitored for abuse.
We work to comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regardless of where your personal information is stored or processed.
Changes to This Policy
The Mises Institute may change this policy at any time without prior written notification. The version published on this page is always the policy in force, and the date at the top shows when it last changed.
